Name: Blake Belladonna
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: About halfway through 6x07 "The Grimm Reaper", before the team arrives in Argus
Age: 18
Backstory: wiki link here.
(cw: grooming, abusive relationships)
tl;dr: Blake was born on a small island named Menagerie, to parents who were both Faunus – humanoids with an animal aspect. Faunus are a minority group and heavily discriminated against in Remnant, and Blake's parents ran an activist group called the White Fang, which was intended to be a bridge of peace between Faunus and humans, which Blake grew up in.
When she was eleven, she met a man named Adam, who seemed passionate and generous and committed to the cause, and Blake became attached to him quickly. He wasted no time in swaying her to his more extreme opinions about how Faunus should take back their rights with violence, and when she was twelve, her parents stepped down as leaders of the group, but Blake remained with the White Fang after a fall-out with her parents. As a young girl, she was easily influenced, and eventually fell into a relationship with Adam when she was 15 and he was 22. Inevitably, he revealed his true spiteful and abusive nature, and when she was 17, Blake started working on a plan to run away.
When she did, she submitted an application to Beacon Academy, a combat school that taught students how to fight against the monsters of Grimm, the monsters constantly threatening the human population. She was assigned to a team with Ruby, Weiss, and Yang – team RWBY – and though Blake was reclusive and traumatized and fearful of being truthful, she slowly started opening up to them. As soon as she did, her worst fear came true: Adam returned for revenge, helped destroy the school, and mutilated Yang. Blake ran, convinced that she was the cause of all of it, and left for her home – but after time, and a lot of healing, eventually met up with her team again.
Personality:
+ Default emotional state and temperament: Blake's general demeanor is reserved, serious, and cool. She's a big introvert and socially shy, though not socially awkward – she's eloquent, softly spoken, and fairly mellow about most things. With people she trusts, Blake displays a dry sense of humor. She's highly empathetic, and emotionally intelligent, though isn't eager to get into deep conversations with strangers.
+ Motivations and goals: Blake's primary motivation has always been fighting for a better world for her people, the Faunus. She signed up to Beacon Academy to become a Huntress in the course of that journey, hoping that she would find a way to fight back against inequality and oppression. In the course of that fight, she took back the activist group the White Fang from the extremist factions that had started to dominate it, and now seeks to act as a bridge between Faunus and humans while protecting humanity from Grimm.
Recently in her canon, her school was destroyed by a combination of destructive factions, and she found out that the source of that evil was an immortal witch named Salem who seeks to destroy all of Remnant. Along the way, she also found out that magic is real. This forms her second primary motivation (as well as the primary plot of RWBY): to fight Salem and her forces, and bring peace to Remnant.
+ Regrets and fears: Blake's biggest regret is her abandonment of her team, something she feels she's still trying to make up for – and her biggest fear is that she'll do it again. She has promised them that she won't leave again, but she's terrified that running away from things might just be an inescapable part of her nature. Even more than that, she fears hurting her friends again, and that Adam will come back and hurt them even worse the second time.
+ Breaking points: A good way to get Blake ranting angrily is to bring up oppression of minority groups and injustice against the most vulnerable, but her biggest trigger point is her past relationship with Adam. He was highly emotionally and psychologically manipulative – a feat made relatively easy by their big age difference, and how young Blake was – and had Blake totally dependent on him, unquestioning for the longest time. He swayed her into a more extreme point of view in how to fight for Faunus rights, and the only reason Blake was able to break free of his control was when he openly started murdering a lot of humans in such numbers that Blake couldn't take standing by his side anymore.
+ Values: Blake views honesty as one of her most highly regarded traits – perhaps ironically, as it's something she has trouble with herself. It's one of the traits she admires the most about her best friend Yang. She thought of Huntresses as being the noble warriors in Remnant, and so sought to join them, hoping that nobility would rub off on her and lend her cause some aid. When she was young, she greatly valued hope and optimism – but Adam's abuse turned her far more cynical and jaded about such things – and it's only more recently that Blake has started to view those qualities as strengths again instead of weaknesses.
+ How do they handle change and trauma? Specifically the changes and trauma of turning into a monster?: Historically, Blake hasn't handled her trauma well at all. She closes off, doesn't talk to anybody until someone pries it out of her, and gets so self-destructive she stops sleeping and eating. Even recently, though she has started dealing with her trauma in a healthier way, she still has trouble with it, and can only open up to those she trusts.
Regarding the trauma of turning into a monster, Blake will almost certainly self-isolate a lot. She promised her team she wouldn't leave them again, and she intends to hold on to that promise, but she'll likely want to hide a lot of her problems and pretend she's fine. She's tired of laying so much pain at her friend's doorsteps.
+ Closing statements: In summary, Blake was initially the moody emo shadow-themed character of RWBY who has undergone a lot of character development and trauma processing and is now starting to gain some confidence and happiness. She also has a huge crush on Yang, which didn't get confessed until volume 9, but will almost certainly be confessed a lot sooner in Route 666. At least she'll have a hot buff girlfriend to cope with the pain?
Powers/Abilities:
🐈⬛ Aura. All people from Remnant can harness the energy of their soul to activate their Aura, which provides a shield and prevents serious injury. This has finite energy, however, and can run out, at which point the user is then vulnerable to injury.
🐈⬛ Semblance: Shadow. Likewise, all people from Remnant properly trained in combat can also harness their Semblance, their own personal superpower. Blake's is the ability to create short-term shadow clones which can distract, take hits meant for her, and relocate her a short distance away. She can also infuse them with elemental properties if she has Dust (a reagent in Remnant), but she won't have any in Route 666. She may, however, eventually be able to mimic the same effect if she ever gets elemental magic.
🐈⬛ Gambol Shroud. Her weapon, complicated enough to warrant a slot here: it is a multi-form weapon consisting of a short katana and a cleaver-like sheath. The katana's blade can draw back to reveal the barrel of a pistol, and with a long ribbon attached at the base, it can also act as a grapple.
Inventory:
🐈⬛ Huntress outfit. Blake's clothes consist of black leggings with long black boots that end at her thighs, a black crop top, and a long white jacket.
🐈⬛ Scroll. aka, the Remnant version of a smartphone.
Game Plans: Blake is at a point in her canon where she's just come out of the lowest point of her emotional arc, but not fully. Having a tendency to run away when things get hard, Blake abandoned her team when they needed her, convinced that her presence would get them all hurt worse and terrified that her former abuser would kill them all after he threatened to do exactly that, and she has been suffering massive amounts of guilt since then. In volumes 4 and 5, when she was away from her team, she had a friend by her side who was gradually able to get her to open up, and helped her to understand that pushing her team and friends away was the wrong thing to do. More confident and self-assured, Blake returned to her team, and has been traveling with them since then, until being pulled into the convoy.
The primary thing I'd like to do with her is explore her emotional state at this point in the series, because while she is a little more confident and outgoing, it's an incredibly fragile state. She depends heavily on her team, and having her interact with strangers outside of that will be interesting – while she's open with her team, strangers are a different story altogether, but making more friends will have a huge impact on her emotional journey.
With Yang, her teammate and best friend, there's going to be a long journey there. Adam, Blake's terrible ex, cut off Yang's arm as Yang was trying to defend Blake, and Blake has been suffering with guilt ever since. At that point in the series, Blake is awkwardly trying to make up for it by being helpful, but Yang is reading it as Blake thinking that she's weak and needs help, and it's just kind of a mess. They'll have a lot to work out inbetween all the shenanigans.
My primary choice for Blake's monster transformation is undead vampire, which I believe will offer a whole host of interesting things to explore. The need to feed off others is something that Blake would struggle with greatly, as she's already convinced that all she does is hurt people.
Monster Choice:
1. Undead (vampire). By far my top choice for Blake because she has huge fears about hurting and abandoning people, and also because her girlfriend will be a werewolf.
2. Drakonis (chimera). Second choice, because it would also be very interesting to make her turn into something Grimm-like.
3. Merfolk (merrow). Thematically interesting because she's from a pacific island, but my last choice.
Vehicle Choice: The Volkswagen Camper, in purple and white. Its vehicle quality is Spacious; the last two rows of seats have been removed, leaving four in front, and a large empty space in back.
Sample: Blake's reply to Yang's toplevel
